Man Ray, the Free Eye of Surrealism
With its latest album from the 100 Photos for Press Freedom collection, Reporters Without Borders pays tribute to a legendary figure of the avant-garde: Man Ray. Photographer, painter, inventor, and visual poet, Man Ray – born Emmanuel Radnitsky – radically transformed the codes of photography in the 20th century.
Born in the United States but quickly drawn to the artistic effervescence of 1920s Paris, he turned the camera into a tool of experimentation, provocation, and beauty.

This album, featuring over 100 images, offers a visual journey through his most iconic periods: from his early works in 1915 to his famous “rayographs,” including portraits of legendary artists like Dalí, Duchamp, Aragon, and Éluard, and his mythical collaborations with muses Kiki de Montparnasse and Lee Miller.
The portfolio is enriched with original texts by José-Louis Bocquet, Emmanuelle de l’Ecotais, Maud Simonnot, and Whitney Scharer, offering literary and biographical perspectives on this elusive and brilliant artist.
More than a tribute, this volume is a declaration of freedom: the freedom to create, to think, to see differently. As always, 100% of the album’s profits go to Reporters Without Borders, supporting those who risk their lives around the world to keep us informed.
