Although often associated with the Enlightenment, Rousseau's work is far more complex and nuanced. Marked by poverty, recognition, religion and tumultuous liaisons, Rousseau criticized a changing society. His constant need to justify himself and his banishment by his peers shaped his erratic thinking. Despite these challenges, he left many indelible traces.
