Tea Season in Geneva: Five Must-Visit Spots

by Laëtitia Cadiou

From Betjeman & Barton to Geneva’s grand hotels, five addresses celebrate the art of tea through exceptional blends, delicate rituals and elegant afternoon teas.

As the days grow shorter, tea naturally takes its place at the heart of the table. In Geneva, there are many ways to embrace the season: selecting a rare tea from a specialist tea house, discovering the artistry of a tea master, or taking time for an elegant afternoon tea in a historic hotel. Here are five addresses, each offering its own interpretation of this timeless ritual, from Carouge to the shores of Lake Geneva.

Before You Choose: A Matter of Tea Leaves, Water and Time

Tea is not a single drink, but a world of rituals and flavours. White and green teas generally call for cooler water and careful steeping; oolongs often reveal their complexity over several infusions, while black teas and pu-erh can withstand higher temperatures, offering deeper, richer profiles. Rather than following a universal rule, the best approach is to trust the tea house’s recommendations for each individual harvest.

Betjeman & Barton, Carouge — Expert Advice and the Art of Tea Blending

In Carouge, Betjeman & Barton champions a refined yet approachable approach to tea. Founded in Paris in 1919, the house has spent over a century cultivating a delicate balance between English tradition and French creativity in tea blending. At its boutique on Rue Saint-Joseph, visitors come for exceptional teas, fragrant blends and elegant accessories, but above all for the expert advice of a team who know their tea leaves as well as their customers’ tastes.

The best approach is to choose a tea to suit the moment rather than its colour: a bright, invigorating blend for the morning, an oolong for the afternoon, or a soothing infusion for the evening. Occasional workshops and tasting sessions offer an opportunity to explore this wonderfully engaging approach to tea.

What we love: the personalised advice and the opportunity to discover new flavours without feeling overwhelmed by an endless tea selection.

Address: Rue Saint-Joseph 35, 1227 Carouge
Opening hours: Monday 2 pm–6.30 pm; Tuesday–Friday 9.30 am–6.30 pm; Saturday 9.30 am–6 pm

La Tsarine, old town — The Cave of a Hundred Teas

In its elegant blue-and-gold setting in Geneva’s Old Town, La Tsarine offers over a hundred loose-leaf teas from Dammann Frères and Mariage Frères. Alongside the great classics, discover pu-erh teas from Yunnan and oolongs from Taiwan, carefully selected directly from their regions of origin.

Everything is designed to inspire curiosity: tea leaves are weighed by hand, expert advice is always on hand, and the 20g discovery format lets you sample a tea without committing to a full-sized tin. It’s the perfect address for comparing different flavour profiles, finding a thoughtful gift or starting your own tea collection at home.

What we love: the tasting-sized portions, the rare tea selection and the boutique’s almost theatrical charm.

Address: Rue de la Tour-de-Boël 3, 1204 Geneva
Opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10 am–7 pm; Thursday 10 am–8 pm; Saturday 10 am–6 pm; Sunday 11 am–4 pm; closed on Mondays

Caiyun Tea — Exploring the Many Faces of Chinese Tea

Caiyun Song does more than serve tea: she shares the stories behind its different varieties, rituals and traditions. A qualified tea master, she works with leaves sourced in part from her own tea plantations in China, introducing visitors to the six main families of tea in a welcoming space combining a boutique, workshop, tea room and light dining.

Here, tea also finds its way into the kitchen. Marinades, slow-cooked dishes, creative drinks, dumplings, bowls and pastries reveal its versatility as a culinary ingredient. Whether you stop by for a cup of tea and a sweet treat, enjoy lunch or book a workshop to explore water temperatures, teaware and multiple infusions, there is always something new to discover.

What we love: a cultural and culinary approach that takes tea beyond the cup and onto the plate.

Address: Ruelle de la Vinaigrerie 8, 1207 Geneva
Opening hours: Monday–Saturday 9.30 am–9 pm; closed on Sundays
